Description David Findlay 2002-11-06 10:41:08 UTC
Version: 1.4.3 (using KDE 3.0.3)
Installed from: (testing/unstable)
Compiler: gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian prerelease)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.19

It would be great if Kmail had support for retrieving messages via Gotmail(for hotmail access) and FetchYahoo(for yahoo mail access). All it needs to do is invoke those programs and take their output into the normal mail retrieval system. Even better would be a framework to allow the use of scripts to retrieve mail.

I'd envision when adding a new server, it would ask you if it was Local spool, POP3, IMAP, Web Based or Script. Web based would give you the option of using gotmail or fetchyahoo if installed, and Script would give you the option of setting up KMail to use a script.

Sure you can configure this manually, but it's so much nicer if it can be configured via an easy to use GUI. Thanks,

David

Outlook Express supports this, but Outlook annoyingly doesn't. I think outlook express calls it http mail or something.

I'd like to see this too.

I believe Outlook 2000 doesn't support this, but Outlook 2002/2003 (?) supports retrieving from hotmail. Hotmail/Yahoo access via kmail gets my vote; I can currently access hotmail via a plugin to Mail.app under MacOSX.

I think being able to set this up would remove another obstacle to getting users set up with KDE as a primary desktop -- they could use their existing web mail (undoubtedly, one of the major applications that people use computers for these days) via their Linux/UNIX laptop/desktop in an intermittently-connected mode. I personally had cause to set up two such users in the last month (albeit under Windows).

There is / was a project @ hotwayd.sf.net that made a universal httpmail -> pop3 filter that works very well. Unfortunately it is limited by the pop3 protocol, so it d/ls all msgs in the inbox, but doesn't support folders. The guy was working on a imap version, but then he went on vacation and never came back. According to the wedsite, he was pretty far along. It would be great if kde could adopt this product and integrate it into KMail as an option.

Hi, as another user feedback this would be really "nice to have" but I think kmail should not integrate specific command like gotmail (who knows if this tool is installed).

A really nice feature would be anyhow to specify a shell commend (as text) to check for email for local mailboxes. This way anyone who wants could define gotmail or any other program.

Best regards, Lars

You can do that now. I'm just suggesting a framework that would make it easier
to set up commonly used stuff like gotmail, or the program that fetches yahoo
mail. Thanks,

David

Just two comments:
a) there is a DUP of this bug (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78627)
b) Hotmail won't support WebDAV (http://news.com.com/2102-1038_3-5381740.html), so some applications for accessing messages won't work anymore (I guess, that fetchyahoo and gotmail should not be affected that much).

A couple of guys from the Netherlands have written in dutch an work-around to read mail from hotmail in KMail as a local mail folder.
But you have to use a gotmailrc file to fill in your email address, password, etc. and you have to run a gotmail perl script.

Maybe I can convert this script to C++, so it can be used to get the mail from inside KMail?

Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.

Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
