SUMMARY
KDE6 changed the default behavior of desktop widget's popup windows. In KDE5 they were readily dismissable - I believe when they lost focus, they would disappear. This is ideal for windows like these.

In KDE6, seemingly the only way to get rid of them is to a) focus them and b) press escape. There is no discoverable close button on most/all of them. Clicking on the desktop background does not get rid of them. They persist ON TOP of the stack of you switch to an application (although they will, at least sometimes, disappear after some short period of time in this scenario).

There appears to be no setting to control this behavior.

This issue causes me enough friction that I'm honestly contemplating shopping DEs (although in reality I will probably come back to KDE again). I interact with widget windows many times a day, and it's consistently annoying.

Video showing the behavior. Note that the only way (I've discovered) to dismiss these is to click on them for focus and then press esc.

The arrow next to the tray icons that points up when none of the widgets are open, switches and points down (with a tooltip of "Close popup") when a tray widget is open. Does that function on your system?
Comment 4 Reuben 2025-02-10 15:59:05 UTC
OK, that does work - but I hadn't noticed it in my 5 months on KDE 6. I don't think it's very discoverable.
Comment 5 John Kizer 2025-02-10 20:04:09 UTC
In the default configuration, I think it's a bit more discoverable since there's a full panel on the bottom of the screen, with the widget popping up immediately above the tray - so the animation for that arrow to close the panel is happening right next to the popup.

Now, for the other part of what you described, where clicking elsewhere on the display doesn't close the widget - just to check, is the widget pinned perhaps? (Top-right of the pop-up) And does this issue happen if you're using the stock Breeze global theme?
