SUMMARY
IMAP mail account, address book and calendars can't go online.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set up a new IMAP account in kmail, a DAV address book in Kontact and a DAV calendar in KOrganizer
2. Folders/DAV are synced, but no mails/contacts/calendar data, as account goes immediatly offline
3. Telling the account to go online has no effect. All other apps, also thunderbird, are online and retrieve/send without a problem to the same server over the  same connection.

OBSERVED RESULT
Mails/contacts/calendars can't be synced, no matter what.

EXPECTED RESULT
Mails/contacts/calendars should be synced, account should be online checking for updated data.

Linux/KDE Plasma: OpenSuse Tumbleweed

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I use nordvpn for the interrnet connection, but as I said, all this works over the same connection with thunderbird. As all the parts of Kontact are affected, could akonadi be the problem?

I installed package "akonadi-apparmor" and the account went online for several seconds, downloaded all the mail, then went offline again.

nordvpn 
are you using a web browser app to control the VPN?
does KDE Network Manager indicate any connection issues when nordvpn is running?

No, I use the rpm directly from NordVPN. KDE Network Manager indicated that the internet connection would be restricted. So I did a fresh install without NordVPN and everything works like intended. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Coincidentally, I've been having similar issues with ExpressVPN recently.
then I finally realized Network Manager wasn't happy starting the VPN from the Firefox app.

so I had to by-hand create a real VPN configuration in Network Manager.
sounds like nordVPN is better than expressVPN in this regard.

So, I did more testing and found out the following:
- NordVPN installed the official way using this manual https://support.nordvpn.com/hc/en-us/articles/20398426993809-Installing-and-using-NordVPN-on-openSUSE-Linux leads to Kontact/KMail/KOrganizer being offline all the time.
- Unistalling the app NordVPN restored Kontact/KMail/KOrganizer being online again.
- Installing NordVPN manually in KDE Networkmanager by importing the VPN connection file from my NordVPN account gives me a working VPN while maintaining Kontact/KMail/KOrganizer being online. So that's the fix.

Side note: I email NordVPN with the problem. Maybe they can find an easier fix.
