Description Alex Chudnovsky 2002-10-27 14:58:58 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.0.8)
Installed from: Mandrake RPMs
OS: Linux

It would be much better if there be a possibility to drag&drop URLs/files/etc between tabs in Konqueror, exactly as there is a possibility to drag&drop between windows - i.e dragging URL to a tab & holding it over the tab activates the tab and makes it uppermost, thus giving a user the possibility to continue dragging to the needed point within the subwindow.

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 47574 ***
Comment 2 Roger Larsson 2003-03-25 02:36:01 UTC
This is not a duplicate of 47574.
"between" does not indicate that the new URL should be placed between tabs,
it does request to move files between different tabs - think file manager.

Once I suggested that dragging and holding over any item should generate a
left mous button click. This would have solved this case too...

Yes, this is a logical, easy to implement feature. I intuitively expected it to exist. Same
behavior as the task bar, for tab bars. and this is definately NOT a dupe of the above.
Can somebody change that?

I agree, this really needs to be implemnted. Her eis how it would be natural to
work like:

When I drag and drop a url, file etc. over a tab that tab should be opened as
the active tab and once there I should b able to drag and drop it wherever I
want inside the tab. This way, i can not only drag and drop stuff jsut in a tab,
I can drag and drop stuff intp any directory in that tab.

Dragging a file oven an active tab and having the tab open is similar to the
'spring-loaded' mechanism for MacOSX (except in macosx, it works for folders; you
drag a file over a folder and hold it there for a few seconds, then the folder opens up). I
think this feature is pretty popular among their users.
Comment 7 Krishna Sethuraman 2003-06-02 01:49:01 UTC
I think Mr. Radu meant that you drag a url/file and hold (not drop) it over a tab, then the
tab opens, and then you can drag it further into the folder (or a subfolder of that folder)
being displayed in that tab.
Comment 8 Alex Radu 2003-06-02 08:23:48 UTC
Nevermind that. It was poorly explained and it is even flawed usability wise. Her eis
what I really meant :p

***Drag and drop files/folders/urls support between tabs***

For example if I have my home directory opened in my active tab and I have another
tab open with my Documents folder and I want to move one folder to the documents
tab, I should be able to simply drag and drop it on the Documents tab which would
work exactly as if I was dragging and dropping things from one window to the other.

This should not work the way described above if it is not possible.

For example if the user has dragged a Koffice file from a window to a tab with
yahoo.com loaded in it, he obviously does not wish to copy or move it to yahoo.com
which is an impossible action. Therefore, the user must be trying to view the content
he dragged to that tab into that tab. Or if he is dragging a link from a website to a
new tab that is blank or holding another website, than the link should be opened in
that tab, because it certainly can't be copied. In a nutshell, it should work the same
way it works between windows. For example if i have suse.com opena dn drag and
drop a pdf or image onto that window it will be displayed, Konqueror will not make
any attempts to copy the content to suse.com.

This may be a little confusing. But, for the user it is very natural, he wouldn't even
think about such things.

This idea is part of a compilation of ideas to improve the way tabs are handled in
Konqueror and by KDE in general. The list is not yet complete and a few of the
entries appear to be duplicates, while some are original, most differ from other
bugs.kde.org wishes by implementation.

The list has been submitted to bugs.kde.org, but because the points were not
separated, it was clsoed even though it received an overwhelming amount of votes
and it currently holds a high rating on looky.

Please READ IT HERE: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=6319

Any suggestions are appreciated. I really want to iron out all the writting erros as
well as logic errors out of the list before I separate and submit each wis individually.
(of course I will read through it again too and dupes will not be submitted)

Thanks a lot!!!

Holding a drag over a tab activates the tab now in HEAD.
