Description David 2024-12-16 10:55:26 UTC
SUMMARY
Updating KDE from 5 to 6 forcibly changes my user configurations for several things.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install a KDE version from the 5 series.
2. Configure it to use single-click for opening files and folders, and to use the X11 session.
3. Upgrade all KDE-related software to version 6.
4. Restart the computer.

OBSERVED RESULT
My user configurations are overwritten without my consent: files and folders are set to open with a double click instead; and the default session is wayland, which brings up lots of issues if my config was for X11 before (e.g. it interprets cursor sizes differently, some fonts look blurry with resolution scaling, activates different desktop effects by default, lots of other things broken under it, among others).

EXPECTED RESULT
Should not overwrite my user configurations without asking.

Yep, I'm afraid that's how changes to default settings work. People who didn't change the old default settings get the new one.

We specifically made this change for Plasma 6.0, because as a major version, there was already the expectation of changes.
