Have separate sort by options for specific file types. Preferably allow separate folder and files sort by preference. 
Example have folder be sort by "Name" from "A-Z" and image files sort by "Created" from "Oldest first"

It seems this could at least be saved on a per folder basis

Yes, this would be useful for images with sub categories folder labels.
