SUMMARY
i want to be able to start a gesture from anywhere on the navigation bar, for example starting from the home button and dragging up to show the task switcher.
this would eliminate the need for the edge swipe gesture, which works differently from what is common on android for example, because you have to swipe in first from the bottom of the screen currently.

this would also fix issues with the edge swipe gesture overlapping and stealing focus from the navigation buttons on the navigation bar close to the screen edge.

this would also open up the possibility of replacing the buttons with a pill as a gesture hint like on iOS/android

Both this and the issue you linked result from the gestures being active when they should not be. I'll mark this one as duplicate of the other because of that, but the "replacing buttons with a pill" could be a standalone feature request. In the current system that's not the design intention (it's either nav bar without gestures or gestures), but I can see people wanting that (even if just for familiarity from other OSes)
