I dont't test Xorg but on wayland when you select cursor shape -> block and blinking enabled on left side of cursor vertical line will appear. It hard to capture by screenshot.

during blinking:
line on left when cursor is blank (|), no line when on ([])
You just need type something  to see it

IT has been fixed with last KDE release
