deskto[p setting from context menu

Description Emmett Culley 2024-07-25 17:13:39 UTC
SUMMARY
There doesn't seem to be a way to set desktop icon sizes anymore.

In the colors and themes section there used to be a button at the bottom to set system icon sizes. Now you can only select an icon theme.

I tried logging in with X11. That didn't fix anything.

What am I missing?

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open System settings dialog
2. Click on colors and themes
3. Click on icons in second list

OBSERVED RESULT
Not way to adjust icon sizes

EXPECTED RESULT
A way to adjust icon sizes

(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.4.0
Qt Version: 6.7.2

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Tested under both wayland and x11

In Plasma 6, desktop icon sizes are set in the config window for the desktop itself (Right-click on desktop > Desktop and Wallpaper > Icons > Icon Size).

This was actually how you did it in Plasma 5 too, and the config UI on the System Settings Icons page only ever changed the *default* size which would then be overridden by the actual desktop settings themselves, doing nothing. That's why it was removed for Plasma 6.

No such context menu.

" (Right-click on desktop > Desktop and Wallpaper > Icons > Icon Size)"

Does not exist.

I see no "Desktop and Wallpaper" when write clicking on the desktop.

There is a Display configuration choice, but that takes me the the system settings dialog, and ther is no way to change icon sizes there.

Then something is odd with your Plasma installation. Maybe long ago you of your distro removed that item from the context menu.

Can you take a screenshot of what you do see when you right-click on the desktop?

Knid opf difficulet to take a screenshot on a context menu. I see no way to do it. Open spectacal and the context menu disappears.

Any other suggestions. How do change the desktop context menu?
Comment 5 Nate Graham 2024-07-25 23:00:28 UTC
Use Spectacle's delay feature, or a global shortcut (this one only works on Wayland).

Looks like it's missing, yeah. I would recommend re-adding it.

Thankfully you can get to the config window in another way: right-click on desktop > Enter Edit Mode > Desktop and wallpaper (on the toolbar at the top of the screen area).

From there you can change the icon size as I described.

You can also re-add previously-removed items to the context menu using the Mouse Actions page > "configure" button next to "Standard menu".

deskto[p setting from context menu

OK, I was able to get the desktop and wallpaper context menu item back. Thanks for that. However, it isn't any different from what I get when I click on that from the Enter edit mode dialog. See attachment.

Nothing about icons.

I got part my issue resloved by right clicking in the folder views and selecting "icons". that let me select a relative (larger) icon size.

From the exercise we just went through, that looks like the only way to adjust icon size.

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Right, by default the desktop is in "Folder" mode, but it looks like you've also changed that to "Desktop". So whatever you are using for a folder view, that's the thing you need to configure.
