I saw this on my timeline and I think it makes sense. Probably not invisible all together but collapsed like "Quoted post is hidden" similar to attachments.

Don't show quotes for hidden posts or with media attachments

This way it acts more like a link preview, and looks less awkward with
a giant media attachment.
