SUMMARY
I can’t seem to find this string in the UI (there’s no longer a ‘RGB range’ option in the kscreen KCM in Plasma 6.1.1?), but I’m translating kscreen KCM, and found this string explaining the ‘RGB range’ option:

  Determines whether or not the range of possible color values needs to be limited for the display.
  This should only be changed if the colors on the screen look washed out.

First, whether an option should ‘only be changed’ depends on which value it is *currently* set to. So this part of the string doesn’t really make sense.

Second, the assumption that it should only be changed if the colours look washed out, isn’t true. I have my system connected to a TV, and I need to change range to ‘Limited’ because the the (darker) greys are crushed to black, which is the opposite of the colours being ‘washed out’. (On the other hand, if I had a computer monitor connected, having the option set to ‘Limited’ *would* probably result in washed out colours.)


The point is that the correct setting depends on the output source, and having the wrong value can result in *either* crushed blacks (lost detail in darker areas) or washed out colours (dark colours turning lighter), *depending* on the (properties of the) output hardware / screen.
