related to bug 46170

I have a eMail which caused kmail to gobble up store (until the X session was killed); I can supply a the email if necessary. I removed this from the folder file by hand editing. kmail then noted that something was out of date, and crashed. I had to remove the .drafts* files (message was in drafts) before kmail sorted itself out.

No. It (the crash because of missing/outdated index files) is a 
duplicate of Bug# 48688 and has already been fixed.
