Was able to reproduce this on Solus with Plasma 6 in a Wayland session, and in KDE Neon with Plasma 6.1 On Solus, not only did the search bar not receive input until clicked, it didn't receive visual focus until clicked either. On a KDE Neon VM the behavior was as described - the search bar received visual focus but I was unable to enter text until I clicked the field.
