Description opensorce 2024-06-03 18:26:09 UTC
SUMMARY
When logging into SDDM with Wayland while using Nvidia 555.42.02 driver, Plasma 6.2 doesn't fully load.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install the Nvidia 555.42.02 driver
2. Login to SDDM with Wayland
3.

OBSERVED RESULT
The screens show a black background with no splash screen. Eventually the "KDE Plasma 6.2 Dev" logo appears at the bottom right of each screen. No mouse pointer. No reaction to keyboard. Eventually it will show a clock.

EXPECTED RESULT
Load normally as it does with X11

Does it work with an older nvidia driver? 555.42.02 is a beta driver with a some known bugs.

Probably, I'm not sure. 555.42.02 is the driver with explicit sync for Wayland.
It works very well with KDE Neon "User" (stable)

Update: A trick I had to use to make games work properly in the stable release seems to make it launch Wayland but in Safe Graphics mode.
The "trick": Install 555.42.02, reboot, install nvidia-driver-530 (or other stable driver), reboot to CLI (systemctl set-default multi-user.target), re-install Nvidia 555.42.02.
This makes Wayland load but it reports "nomodeset" and it's very laggy. Definately have the correct modeset.
"opensorce@EdgeUnstable:~$ sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modeset
Y"

Will update when I figure it out.
Comment 4 opensorce 2024-06-04 12:52:03 UTC
Disregard previous. It only worked because it was loading parts of the 530 driver. After "sudo apt-get purge ^nvidia-*" and then re-installing 555.42.02 it's back to the previous behavior.

I noticed this status is waiting for info. What info? Does it work with older drivers? Yes. It's laggy and terrible but it will boot Plasma 6 in Wayland. Tested on 530.

Let me restate a few important points:
This is the driver with explicit sync for Wayland.
This is the driver that every Nvidia GPU owner who want to play any game on Linux will be using.
This is the driver that Plasma should be focused on working well with.
This driver works fine on the User version of KDE Neon.
Comment 6 opensorce 2024-06-04 21:46:08 UTC
Might be completely irrelevant but if I load Plasma with X11 and set some apps to autostart, it will launch them. PrntScr will also launch Spectacle. Some apps like Discover or system setting will launch then freeze. Konsole and the Nvidia settings app work fine.
Comment 7 opensorce 2024-06-05 16:55:54 UTC
Issue persists on complete OS re-install with Nvidia 555.52.02 Beta (Newer driver)
Comment 8 opensorce 2024-06-06 14:46:01 UTC
Okay, I'm going to step away. The explicit sync is working perfectly with Fedora. When Plasma 6.1 releases I'll give KDE Neon another try.
Comment 9 opensorce 2024-06-19 20:37:14 UTC
And... you folks released it live without fixing this. :-(
Hopefully (probably) the Fedora folks will fix it before they let it hit the stable branch.
Comment 10 opensorce 2024-06-21 03:50:34 UTC
Fedora fixed it. Plasma 6.1 working great with Nvidia 555.52.04 drivers on Fedora. I'll keep my Neon installation in place for another few days on the off chance that anyone ever looks at this bug report again. I'm always happy to do some testing if anyone is interested :-)

Didnt answer my question.

We can't guarantee Plasma working with Beta drivers which may have bugs themselves.

DID answer your question: " Does it work with older drivers? Yes. It's laggy and terrible but it will boot Plasma 6 in Wayland. Tested on 530."
Not that anyone will read this in the next month but again: THIS is the Nvidia driver that Linux gamers with Nvidia GPUs will need to use in order to game on Linux.
This driver is a big deal. You should make sure it works BEFORE the driver goes live and you have a ton of Nvidia users on live drivers who can't use Plasma. It's called being proactive.
Comment 13 opensorce 2024-06-28 16:28:47 UTC
Tested on STABLE (Not Beta) driver 555.58. Same results. This issue is now on Live versions of the Plasma and Nvidia drivers. Anyone reading this should avoid KDE Neon and use Fedora.
