Description John Veness 2024-04-01 14:39:53 UTC
SUMMARY
A recent openSUSE Tumbleweed upgrade changed from Plasma 5.27 to Plasma 6.0. With that came a new wallpaper, which is fine. However, I couldn't find an easy way to revert to the previous default wallpaper.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Be running Plasma 5.27
2. Upgrade to Plasma 6.0
3. Notice wallpaper has changed
4. Right-click on Desktop and choose "Configure Desktop and Wallpaper"

OBSERVED RESULT
No entry for the previous wallpaper.

EXPECTED RESULT
An entry for the previous wallpaper.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I did eventually find the old wallpaper manually, but it was tricky! I had to search the KDE Store for "mountain" and eventually found what I think was what I had before (https://store.kde.org/p/2134894).

Note that I don't mind that the default wallpaper changes with a major Plasma upgrade. I just think there should be a mechanism in the upgrade to "backup" (probably the wrong term) the previous wallpaper during an upgrade, so it's easy to revert to it, using the normal user interface.

It seems like it wouldn't be difficult to save the currently selected wallpaper and/or the previous default wallpaper(s) and add them to the wallpapers available after a Plasma upgrade

We do the old wallpapers all get added to the plasma-workspace-wallpapers package. If you're not seeing the old wallpaper, it means this package isn't installed, which means your distro isn't following https://community.kde.org/Distributions/Packaging_Recommendations. You might want to talk to them about it, and ask for plasma-workspace-wallpapers to be pre-installed by default or made a mandatory dependency of plasma-workspace or something.

Thanks Nate. Installing plasma6-workspace-wallpapers did indeed bring the old wallpapers back. It's good to know this is being done from the KDE side. I've opened https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1228603 to ask if openSUSE can install that package by default.
