STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Set up KWallet to unlock with password as outlined here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE_Wallet
2. Set up fingerprint under Users in settings (in there it says "Logging into system with your fingerprint is not yet supported")

OBSERVED RESULT
No option to log into system with my fingerprint. No way to unlock KWallet using fingerprint let alone do it on login.

EXPECTED RESULT
Fingerprint logs in and unlocks KWallet automatically

Am I understanding correctly that you tried to log into the system with your fingerprint, despite the message saying that "Logging into system with your fingerprint is not yet supported"...?

I could not find an issue to track progress towards when it will be supported so this could be the issue for that. Also I wanted to include the fact that KWallet should be unlocked otherwise logging in with fingerprint is not particularly useful as you would then anyway have to type the password to unlock KWallet.

Right, this isn't implemented in SDDM yet. And SDDM is not a KDE project. You can follow https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/284 to be notified when it eventually (hopefully) gets implemented.

Thanks! I understand SDDM is planned to become a KDE project in time from this comment:  https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/1afnw4r/comment/kobo5si/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 although if SDDM development ends up requiring too many resources, I wonder if it would be feasible to switch to another DM that is well maintained?

Indeed, that's planned, but not completed yet.

SDDM is reasonably well-maintained--as much so as any DM is. Look at its commit history in https://github.com/sddm/sddm/commits/develop/ and you can see there's activity.
