under Kubuntu, i can read the HEIF Fujifilm XT-5, but not under Windows 11

We definitely need a HIF / HEIF sample file from the camera as nothing can be found on the web.

Thank you for the XT-5 sample images. Which digiKam Windows version are you using exactly? Is it possible that you are using an old digKam version from the nightly builds of the KDE server (the current build is broken)? This version did not have HEIF support.
A test of our current Qt5 and Qt6 digiKam-8.2.0 version under Windows shows no problems with these HEIF images, thumbnail and preview being displayed.
Test our current pre-release version of digiKam-8.3.0 from here:

I can read HIF and HEIF Fujifilm XT-5 files on Windows 11 with Digikam 8.3.0 version (not with the 8.2.0 version).
