SUMMARY
Pressing and holding the "alt" key while using the freehand selection tool should remove a portion of the existing selection area as per user manual https://docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/tools/freehand_select.html however it shrinks the application and moves it about.


STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click on freehand selection tool and select and area on the canvas.
2. Press and hold 'alt' key.
3. Draw over a portion of the selected area.

OBSERVED RESULT
Pressing alt creates a minus sign in the cursor (good), but when clicking and dragging the cursor becomes one that looks like the "move a layer" cursor. Dragging a very little way does nothing, dragging a little further shrinks the application and moves it around.

EXPECTED RESULT
Minus sign in freehand selection cursor should stay; some of the selection area should be removed, as per user manual.

Turns out this was a Window Management thing, not a Krita issue. 

KDE Settings -> Window Behaviour -> Window Management -> Window Actions -> change Modifier Key from Alt to Meta.
