1. Open a new tab
2. Type some text with tabs and spaces
3. Toggle "Show Non-Printable Spaces" on

Whitespaces are not displayed

You need to enable 'show whitespace indicators' in the appearance config page. That works as designed, that other option in the menu doesn't trigger for that kind of spaces.
