This is a behaviour I've gotten used to from other tab-using applications. It would be neat to have double-click on the empty tab bar to open a new tab.

Weird, I am on the yesterday's git now, and it never worked for me.

Does not work for me with today's git master either. *Middle-click* opens a new tab, but not *double-click*. Seems like a regression; see Bug 470572.
