under file associations I see that Kate thinks it should open .ogg files which makes absolutely no sense.

I think this is a bug.

I only see we register for text/plain and directories in the desktop file, that seems to be sane.

I see no obvious fault in the .desktop files we ship, ti think you need to report that to your distro.
