In KMail, the contact photos are no longer visible in the header. 
Is this a known issue?

If I change the header style manually e.g. KMail 5.2 to Fancy Headers, then the contact photo is displayed. 
However, as soon as I open/select another mail, the contact photo is gray out. 

If I change the header style again, the contact picture is visible again. 
At least until a new mail is selected.

I have seen this for quite sometime with my Gmail account with exactly the same issue you have. IE change the header style and the photo appears temporarily. It does not seem to happen with my other IMAP account.

Even with the latest updates and a clean new Akonadi installation, the problem still persists.
