1. Make a project directory with whitespace in it
2. Save a project file to it
3. Add a clip from within this project directory
4. Enable proxy clip

Kdenlive throws an error about non-existing directory

Thanks for your report. I cannot reproduce your issue. Can you paste the exact error message ? 
Did you configure Kdenlive to use a specific project folder (in Kdenlive Settings > Project Defaults) ?
