I don't really care about hovering over contacts or groups to check the last message in a conversation most of the time, I just open that conversation instead.

If the preview has two lines, it blocks view of the contact/group just above in the list.

And there's a weird bug (probably not in Neochat) where if the previewed last message is long enough, the tooltip displaying the preview extends behind the cursor, making opening conversations difficult.
