Now this problem has been reported several times, but in digiKam you have to tick all sub-albums that you want to search as well. This is easily done via the right mouse button menu-> Select-> Children. This gives you the option of excluding sub-albums from the search. The behavior is the same everywhere in digiKam. Yes, you can do it, but that's not the point of collections as we understand them. In addition, Parents / Children selections and filters take less time on collections than on the entire catalog of more than 125,000 photos.
