- Graphics platform X11
- Linux 6.2.8 Zen

HOW TO REPRODUCE
1. Create any file or folder on the desktop.
1. Right click on the desktop and select "configure desktop and wallpaper"
2. Set "layout" to "desktop"
3. Install and enable "variety"
 
RESULT
After a few days the layout reverts to "folder view", and the contents of the desktop become visible again.

Please note that Plasma 5.26.5 will not be supported for much longer by KDE; supported versions are 5.27, and 5.27 or newer.

Please upgrade to the latest version as soon as your distribution makes it available to you. Plasma is a fast-moving project, and bugs in one version are often fixed in the next one.

Any chance it's variety manually changing the layout to folder view for *some reason*?

No idea, as it doesn't seem to happen consistently.

I have just asked the variety developers.
