SUMMARY

It seems that Plasma 5.27.0 and 5.27.1 have been shipped without MANY localization strings, and localizers like me are unable to do anything about it at present since there’s nothing to translate. I’ve collected a whole bunch of notes where the desktop shows an English-language string AND there’s nothing corresponding it in my local copy of the L10n Subversion repo.

For instance in system settings:

* Appearance Cursors > ”Configure Launch Feedback…” (the button and the whole dialog it opens)
* Appearance > Touchscreen Gestures (the whole dialog)
* Shortcuts > many of the KWin shortcuts + the “Add Application…” and “Add Command…” buttons and dialogs
* Startup and Shutdown > Desktop Session (most of the dialog)
* Notifications (most of the dialog)
* Applications > Locations > the new “Public path:” and “Templates path:” settings
* Applications > Flatpak Permission Settings (the whole dialog)

Is it the goal that KDE Plasma will be an English-only desktop environment?

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: openSUSE Tumbleweed
(available in About System)
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.1
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.103.0
Qt Version: 5.15.8

Clearly. We just haven't had the time to remove all translations.

Please refrain from such needlessly accusatory statements

Everything you described is properly translated into German for me

You didn't specify your language, but it looks like you are translating Finnish.
Please note that Finnish translations, while quite at a good level, are far from being complete.

I see it translated in Italian.
It is plasma-workspace/kcm_cursortheme.po, and the string you mention are missing in branches/stable/l10n-kf5

Now, I may go on with the check, but it seems the problem is that your team uses summit (trunk/l10n-support), which requires some manual operations (merge and scatter), and Lasse hasn't been around for a while.

I've now executed a merge, so you should see the strings coming from the updated templates, but please check with your team how to move forward.

Also, in the future, please try to raise such issues on the kde-i18n-doc@ mailing list. At least one person per each team should follow the list, and if Lasse is not around it's better for you to follow that list.

Lasse, are you still around? :)
Comment 5 Lasse Liehu 2023-03-03 21:37:07 UTC
Hi. Sorry for forgetting about this. I'm still alive and well but haven't done anything KDE related recently. I should still have a working environment for KDE localization on one of my machines.

Hi! Happy to hear from you. I understand that things can happen, but maybe you can guide and train the other translators in performing those periodic tasks?
Comment 7 Tommi Nieminen 2023-03-06 11:36:19 UTC
Live and learn… No, I didn’t specify the language, because the issue was clearly at source as I said: there was no way to translate something which wasn’t even there.

Now that someone (Luigi? or Lasse?) did something in the SVN repo, the situation is OK. Still I think these kind of things shouldn’t remain only oral knowledge but should be told somewhere like the KDE wiki (https://techbase.kde.org/Localization); some of the people localizing Plasma, like me, are not developers at all…

Just to clarify: the strings to translate were there, in the translation branches. The Finnish team, just like many other teams (including the Italian one) uses an additional layer on top which makes it easier to handle multiple branches, but it requires at the moment some additional work for its handling.
Knowing which language was affected was an important detail, and would have helped the triaging. In general, the more details about the scenario are available to the bug triagers, the better.

It's not done, because the messages are in the summit branch but needs to be "scattered" in the appropriate branches. Both this update (merge) and the scatter need to be performed periodically.
Again, my suggestion is to discuss the future steps and the knowledge transfer in the context of your team's mailing list, https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/kde-l10n-fi .
