when hovering over a link the status bar reports as "link to itself" rather than the file linked to.

I think we need a bit more information and perhaps a screenshot if you can please to identify what the issue is here. A link can mean a symlink or a link to a website and many other things.

I've tested a symlink that's in my home folder and it shows the target in the status bar for me.
