I currently mark all transactions that I've paid as "cleared", so it would be really useful to have a filter for the "Not cleared" status to see what I still need to pay.

Have you tried to use "Not marked?"  I think that will do what you want.
"Not cleared" could mean either not marked at all or Reconciled, which is unlikely what anyone would want to see.

Ah yes, this is what I'm looking for.
I thought this had something to do with Tags (which I'm currently not using), so in my mind I just ignored that option.
