Please check the proposed "ugly hack" in bug 32305 .
I upgraded the severity to "high" because there is a risk of loss of data. See
my comments on this point below. The reporter of Bug 48038 also says: "I was
under the impression that the e-mail is saved on the harddrive. This bug cost
me about 4 hours of work."

When the user restarts KMail the message is automatically loaded in the composer so that the user won't lose a single character. Unfortunately this doesn't always work. I saved it to drafts and then opened it in drafts to verify it was there. I then shutdown my computer and when I went back in it was gone. Unfortunately I believe I over wrote it when I tried the same thing again to test with a ddummy file. If it isn't really saving it in drafts it should not be labeled as such. I frequently will have several drafts to different people I am working on.
