SUMMARY

The issue: I open the first image of a large image folder in gwenview (in normal windowed mode, not in slideshow/fullscreen), and after a short time (less than a second) hit space to show the next image. Instead of showing the next image, a message is shown "You reached the last document", even though this is not the case.

This applies to larger image folders; on my fast laptop it occurs in folders with more than 1000 image files a 2.5 MB each, for example. Such large folders are common; cameras usually have such large image folder sizes. It happens very often to me and is quite annoying.

Note that, when I am viewing the actually last image of the folder, this message is not shown; instead, it automatically wraps to the first image in the folder (the message is shown in fullscreen/slideshow mode, though).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Click on the first image file of a large photo directory (e.g., ~1500 photos on a fast laptop) to open gwenview.
2. Immediately hit "space", trying to show the next image.

OBSERVED RESULT
The "You reached the last document" message is shown instead of switching to the next image.

EXPECTED RESULT
Switch to the next image (with delay if necessary) without showing that erroneous message.

Thank you for the bug report. Unfortunately we were not able to get to it yet. Can we ask you to please check if this is still an issue with Gwenview 25.08.0?

Yes, the bug is still there in Gwenview 25.08, although a few details seem to be different. A large image folder is not required, the bug even occurs when there is just one image in the folder. The bug is easy to trigger in larger images (especially .png); for example, with a single png image of 5 MB in a folder, I can always trigger the bug. With a 2 MB jpg image, I can still trigger the bug, but I need a few tries. The bug can only be triggered immediately after the Gwenview window appears on screen after the program started.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Start Dolphin, navigate to a folder that contains a .png image of size > 5 MB.
2) Click on the image to display it in Gwenview. Immediately after clicking, at the very moment the Gwenview window appears on the screen, hit "space" to switch to the next image.

Observed result:
A "You reached the last document" pop-up is shown instead of switching to the next image as expected. This even occurs when the image was not the last image in the folder, and even when "Notify after reaching the last image" is set to "Never" in the settings.

Cannot reproduce. Some observations:
a) Hitting Space doesn't skipt between images, only arrow buttons work
b) Both do not work when trying to reproduce the bug. I used a 110 MiB file.

Oh yes – I forgot that I set a custom keyboard shortcut (the "space" key) for the "next" action (in Gwenview, open "Configure Keyboard Shortcuts", search for the "next" action, and set the field "Shortcut" to "space" (but leave "Alternate" blank)). I confirm that I cannot reproduce the bug when using the arrow keys, I can only reproduce it with my custom keyboard shortcut.

I just tried it on a different computer, set the "next" action to "space", and could immediately reproduce the bug even with small png. I can also reproduce the bug if I use different custom keys (I tried with "tab" instead of "space"). However, I cannot reproduce it when I instead use the "Alternate" field to set the shortcut. So the work-around is to set "Alternate" to "space" and leave the "Shortcut" field blank; all works as expected then.

Would you mind trying again after setting a custom keyboard shortcut for "next" to the "space" key? Thanks!
