SUMMARY
***
NOTE: If you are reporting a crash, please try to attach a backtrace with debug symbols.
See https://community.kde.org/Guidelines_and_HOWTOs/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open digikam
2. Create a new database (no difference between SQLite and MySQL)
3. Wait a bit (I got to ~70%)

OBSERVED RESULT
At around 70%, the RAM usage got very high (9 GB with gdb, I have 16 GB available) and the program crashes. After the crash, the RAM used is not completely cleared (4 GB total usage before, 9 GB after the crash).

EXPECTED RESULT
digikam should successfully create a database.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.26.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.101.0
Qt Version: 5.15.8
Kernel Version: 6.1.5-zen2-1-zen (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 12 × Intel® Core™ i5-10400F CPU @ 2.90GHz
Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB/PCIe/SSE2
Product Name: H570 Phantom Gaming 4

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
My photo collection is on an HDD, while digikam and my system are installed on my NVMe drive. I have a soft link in my photos-directory on my NVMe to the directory on the HDD with the photo collection.
The photo collection is very large, at 387 GB with 29000 files.
I have not downloaded the additional files.

Comment 2 caulier.gilles 2023-01-15 10:49:17 UTC
Mine is also on a NVME 1Tb ssd. Size of collections is around 550Mb. Computer is an i7 with 32Gb and NVidia video card.

Scanning whole collection from scratch take around 1 hour. No crash. I tried with 7 and 8 digiKam versions, there is no difference. Database is sqlite. Memory allocated is stable around 2Gb, no more.

System is Kubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Which OpenCV version did you use. Please copy the whole contents of Help/Components Info dialog. There are plenty of *GPU* API calls in valgrind. We do not use it in digiKam code, but OpenCV certainly. In last OpenCV 4.7.0, memory leaks have been reported.

When application crash, please capture a gdb backtrace. See instructions here :

https://www.digikam.org/contribute/

Also i recommend to test the AppImage Linux bundle that we provide, where all GPU usages are disabled in OpenCV (at compilation time).

Comment 3 Maik Qualmann 2023-01-15 10:54:08 UTC
I see in the log that the ImageMagick metadata reader is being used extremely often. So you must have images where Exiv2 fails. I'm pretty sure ImageMagick is the cause. In digiKam-8.0.0 the additional ImageMagick reader is disabled and replaced by ExifTool.

Last time I tried using gdb, the whole yakuake window crashed. Thats why I used valgrind
Comment 5 Lorenz Hoffmann 2023-01-27 15:59:27 UTC
Ok interesting, today it worked and finished the scan successfully. Maybe an update fixed this?
Comment 6 Lorenz Hoffmann 2023-01-28 11:20:09 UTC
Ok never mind, it crashes again.
Comment 7 caulier.gilles 2023-01-28 12:48:51 UTC
OpenCV 4.7.0 is used. The problem is know and located in OpenCV library, not digiKam.

digiKam AppImage is compiled with OpenCV 4.6.0.

Also remember that crash can corrupt database and make digiKam unstable in time.
