SUMMARY

Trying to explore smb shares with dolphin (and kio) invariably results in a message that the folder does not exist, unless you had previously set a default user and password from the settings in Settings->Network->Window shares.

This is not sensible and represents a regression with respect to previous times when dolphin was asking for a username and password when needed to open smb shares.

Even worse, this makes no sense when the URL passed to dolphin *contains* the username.

Even even worse, when you have a desktop link for the share and you click on it, if the default username/password is not set in settings for the Window shares, nothing happens and you get zero feedback on what had gone wrong.

I have managed finding my way in this issue thanks to https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/tz3ysq/dolphin_cant_resolve_samba_shares/ that documents the problem.
