STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add .mp4 video clips from any smartphone
2. Kdenlive will force you to transcode them, select highest quality (losless) transcoding
3. Kdenlive will create huge files for each clip

OBSERVED RESULT
Kdenlive forces the transcofing of .mp4 smarpthone videos (maybe other types of videos too, I've not tested other formats). Because you most likely want to work with the best possible quality, Kdenlive will generate really huge files. From a project of mine, I went from 4.5GB raw material to 90GB, this is not manageable.

EXPECTED RESULT
Kdenlive shouldn't force you to transcode anything, like it did in previous versions. Furthermore, if possible, the transcoding process shouldn't really generate a bigger file than the raw source material, where is that extra data coming from?

I have exactly the same problem!

If you "select highest quality (losless) transcoding" then you will always get a comparatively huge size, that is normal.
Mobile videos often have a variable bitrate, no vidoe editor likes that, especially because then picture and sound are not always in sync.
If you only need the picture and not the sound, try not to encode. That would be a quick and easy way, though not ideal.
An alternative would be not to choose the best quality.
Try it and report back.
