SUMMARY
***
"Places" panel in kfilewidget should be able to be toggled off.
***

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Use kfilewidget in icon mode.
2. Look at a whole directory of pictures or video.
3. Notice that you could have a whole column more of icons if you were able to easily toggle "Places" panel.

OBSERVED RESULT
Places Panel using screen space while it's not being used.

EXPECTED RESULT
A little toggle button at the top of the places panel that turns the panel into a icon, and give the screen space back.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Linux/KDE Plasma: Arch Linux, fully up to date.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is related to bug #451773
Using a 4K monitor to do photo and video editing. Even with such a large display area, screen space is at a premium.
In video editing at least, the footage is usually grouped in folders, with file names that the camera gives them. When working in such a folder, the editor would like to select one specific clip among many. In order to be efficient at this job, the images from the icons need to be as large enough to allow the editor to see what the file is about, as the file name is usually just a number. Then there needs to be as many icons as possible in the panel provided to enable the editor to visually search for the file. Once you are in a folder, you don't need the Places panel anymore, and it would be nice to be able to toggle it off to get a little more screen in the kfilewidget panel.

This depends on the implementation. You can toggle it off in the open/save dialog implementation using the F9 keyboard shortcut, or the relevant menu item accessed from the Configure menu.

I'm not familiar with kdenlive's implementation of kfilewidget so I don't know if it has this functionality or not. Moving over there so the kdenlive developers can further triage the request.
