SUMMARY
I want to be able to use Digicam as a photo viewer. So I think to do this, you would have to pass parameters to the "open with" dialog within windows explorer or other app and then direct it to the OpenGL Image viewer, which is good for a preview.

But other options would be to have other switches that would allow photo to open in main program or with other Digikam viewer.

1) have a DKLauncher.exe [with auguments]
2) use DigiKam.exe [with arguments]

digiKam manages image collections and is not intended or designed to just open an external image. You are looking for showFoto. Like digiKam, this is also part of the Windows bundle. showFoto also includes the OpenGL viewer and all image processing plugins.

I don't see any problems with the MOV file on Windows either. Just as a question in the room, could it also be that ffmpeg uses hardware acceleration on some computers and that's why there are problems?

ffmpeg -hide_banner -hwaccels

But how do I use it as default photo viewer? Specifically how would I use it to open an image in a specific view?

Perhaps a different program dedicated to viewing only would be quicker. (showfoto takes several seconds to launch)

>showfoto takes several seconds to launch

Go to Setup/plugins and disable all unwanted tools. This will speed-up start stages.

To assign Showfoto with you preferred image format, change Windows mimetypes-applications table.

Anyway, if Showfoto is not the desired image viewer for you, there are plenty of programs under Windows to do this task. In all cases, as Maik said, this is not the role to digiKam...
