Description Hoang Duy Tran 2021-11-04 13:13:26 UTC
SUMMARY
During translation for UI, I came across this text:

msgid "Drag to change curve directly. Double click to insert new path point."
msgstr ""
"Kéo rê để trực tiếp thay đổi đường cong. Bấm đúp để chèn thêm điểm mới trên "
"đường dẫn."

By examining the translation result on the display, I stumbled across this situation, where the text, English as well as Vietnamese, doesn't display clearly and got cut off with '...' in the middle, making the present of it useless to users.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open Krita, use 1920x1080, 300dpi layout for a new drawing
2. Remove the default painting layer, insert a Vector layer
3. Use any brush to draw a rectangle
4. Use Edit Shape tool to move cursor on the shape and drag the point to the left to round corners, notice the status message on the bottom left, which is short and can be read fully.
5. Right click the mouse and choose 'To Path' to convert the rectangle to path.
6. Now use the 'Edit Shape tool' again to move into lines between points, and you'll see the message 'Drag to change curve directly. Double click to insert new path point.' (with '...' place in the middle of the text, indicating the message has been 'cut-off'. In English, since the text is SHORT in comparison with other languages, the text is still obscure enough to get annoyed, especially for new users. In Vietnamese, it is even worse.

OBSERVED RESULT

EXPECTED RESULT
Tried to look for a way to pop-out the status bar so I can read what is printed there, but there seemed to be no options to do that at the moment.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
macOS: Catalina 10.15.7

The MO file for the Vietnamese language

Use can use this Vietnamese 'krita.mo' file I'm using, and drop it into the directory

Resources/locale/vi/LC_MESSAGES/

replacing the current 'mo' file there for testing. Remember to change the Application Language as required and RESTART Krita once new changed has been applied.

I can confirm this for the Nov 03 5.1.0-prealpha (git 5214230) appimage on Debian 10.

The space available for 'advice' messages is limited to the space used to show the current brush preset, which is actually too small to show the full name of the brush presets on my 1280 px wide display.

@Hoang Duy Tran: the 5.0.0-beta-1 has been suprerceded by the 5.0.0-beta-2 so you should use that for testing.
I believe that the latest nightly builds are not available for macOS.

You can get both stable and master latest nighties from the following links.

Stable 5.0 Nightly: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krita_Stable_MacOS_Build/
git master Nightly: https://binary-factory.kde.org/job/Krita_Nightly_MacOS_Build/

I tried again with build 68c5124 this morning and though English advice message appeared fully, the Vietnamese one, which is MUCH longer, still have the annoying '...' in the middle, making it useless for new Vietnamese users. Experienced users would probably never paid attentions to those advices, as they already knew what they are doing, but new users would require to look at them. Please can you change it to a sub-windows, or put the messages in a horizontal scrollable control so a mouse drag on it would display the entire message, allowing users to scroll through and read those advices fully. You cannot expect users to do 'git clone KDE source' and search for the 'krita.po' file and then read what is said in there.

If, as an example, you try to paint on a vector layer, there is a long warning message that appears over the workspace and image.
Maybe that mechanism, or an adaptation of it, could be used?

A very acute observation Ahab. I like it. But there is a distinction between advices vs prohibitive actions. I think the mechanism for 'prohibitive action' is sound and clear to users but it's not suitable for advices. I cannot post picture examples here in the comment but Blender software has two mechanism for this kind of thing, a separate windows, called 'Info' and the entire bottom screen (a single line) is reserved for messages (a very bad idea for implementation, I personally thought, but they did it).
