SUMMARY
When I add clips to a project, Kdenlive automatically starts performing some clip jobs... What are these jobs, what is it doing? These are large clips which I must convert to proxy clips before I can work with them. So after half an hour of waiting for these clip jobs to finish, I select all the clips, right-click them and select "Proxy clip", then I wait another hour.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Add large clips to project.

OBSERVED RESULT
Unnecessary clip jobs.

EXPECTED RESULT
No unnecessary clip jobs.

What are these clip jobs Kdenlive performs when I add a clip?

Thanks for your report!
These clip jobs create the audio thumbnails for the clips so in fact they are not unnecessary.
We recently made some performance improvements that will land with 22.04 however these are mainly for when you open a project (if you want to test check out the Nightly version).
Concerning the thumbnail generation there is not much we can improve at the moment.
