STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Launch Kate and go to File: Open
2. Select any file on a SMB network share

OBSERVED RESULT
Kate stops responding for about 30 seconds.

EXPECTED RESULT
Kate should load the file, or indicate that the file is being loaded.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The file opens in about one second in Notepad.

Could you try if that still happens for you with a 23.04 version?
