Description stefano.droghetti 2021-08-27 07:03:26 UTC
SUMMARY
In Kdenlive appImages there's no hardware acceleration support

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run the configuration wizard

OBSERVED RESULT
"No hardware acceleration found".
All VAAPI and NVENC profiles disabled

EXPECTED RESULT
Like in my system Kdenlive installed from PPA, the exspected result is "VAAPI" selected in configuration wizard, and vaapi render (and proxy) prifiles enabled.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Kdenlive 21.08.0a appImage on Ubuntu 20.04

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I know it's still because of the ffmpeg appimage version, that's not compiled with hardware acceleration. But I can't choose /usr/bin/ffmpeg in Kdenlive's environment settings, because every time I try to change the path the appimage ignores any changes. I don't know if it's a bug I should report or it's a natural behaviour of appimages.

Thank you for reporting. Unfortunately hardware acceleration is disabled (not implemented) in the AppImage. Use the PPA or the Flatpak for hardware acceleration.

Let's see if we can implement hardware acceleration with the AppImage.

I can't use NVIDIA Hardware Acceleration too with Ubuntu 21.04 ppa, or flatpak with closed source drivers.

Hello,

Would it be possible to add Windows to the list of platforms of this bug? ffmpeg, melt, libavformat et al are all compiled without nvenc or other acceleration support. They are perfectly capable of doing acceleration, as shown by Shotcut. See #426134
Comment 4 emohr 2021-09-29 05:19:13 UTC
You are right. The Mac version doesn't have HW acceleration too.
Comment 5 Erwin 2022-02-14 09:25:52 UTC
Same issue: All encoding/decoding is CPU based and does not use any hardware acceleration:

- Windows 10 Pro
- KDEnlive 21.12.2
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, Ryzen 7 3700X, Ryzen 9 5900X (Fully supported by other video editors like Shotcut, Magix etc)
- NVidia Geforce GTX 1050

Both checkboxes "VAAPI hardware acceleration" and "NVIDIA hardware acceleration" are unchecked.

Rendering productivity with Kdenlive is very slow, even with modern high end AMD hardware.

GPU timeline preview rendering and GPU rendering is implemented.

GPU encoding/decoding for playback is on the roadmap.
I set this bug to wishlist.
