Description Nick Stefanov 2021-06-26 14:06:01 UTC
SUMMARY
Letters sometimes disappear from panel's objects after monitor turn off. I observe this problem after upgrade to Plasma 5.22. All my powersaving settings are turned off. The problem fixes itself if I open another program so the new window push the other panel object and they get refreshed for the new position. Another fix is to open a new web site and the Firefox entry gets fixed. Open another tab in Dolphin which is with different name also fixes it.

nvidia?
Comment 2 Nick Stefanov 2021-06-26 22:25:05 UTC
Yes, but I tried different driver versions and the problem is always here. And one more thing - the driver version was the same between 5.21 and 5.22. On 5.21 this problem doesn't exist but it's here with 5.22.
Comment 3 Nick Stefanov 2021-06-26 22:25:44 UTC
I upgraded to 470.42.01 to no avail.
Comment 4 Nick Stefanov 2021-07-07 09:41:18 UTC
Plasma 5.22.3 - the problem is still here.
Comment 5 Nick Stefanov 2021-07-13 10:00:41 UTC
Tried different themes, nothing helps.

Plasma 5.22.4 - the problem is still here.
Comment 8 Nick Stefanov 2021-07-31 13:30:41 UTC
Hello,
I found that when I check "Inhibit automatic sleep and screen locking", the problem disappears.

But this option isn't remembered between restarts. Can you tell me how to make it permanent or call it via command line in order to make a startup script?
And one more thing - I turned off every powersave option in Energy Saving menu but this doesn't help. The only option that helps is "Inhibit automatic sleep and screen locking".
Comment 9 Nick Stefanov 2021-07-31 17:24:22 UTC
I'm sorry but it was by accident. Now the bug occurred with "Inhibit automatic sleep and screen locking" option turned on. I'm sorry for the false alarm but I waited a whole day before I decide there's no problem.

This is almost certainly an NVIDIA driver bug. Please report it to the NVIDIA folks, either by sending an email to linux-bugs@nvidia.com or making a post at https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/c/gpu-unix-graphics/linux/

It would be helpful to the NVIDIA developers if you could run nvidia-bug-report.sh and attach the resulting file in your report. Thanks!
Comment 11 Nick Stefanov 2021-08-08 21:33:58 UTC
I'm with the same NVIDIA driver version on Cinnamon and this problem is not present there so it's not NVIDIA driver bug. I was with NVIDIA 460 and there was no problems. After upgrading to Plasma 5.21 the problem appeared with the same NVIDIA driver version (460). I tried different driver versions to no avail. Now I'm with 470.57.02 but the problem persists.
Comment 12 Nate Graham 2021-08-09 01:46:42 UTC
The fact that the bug doesn't happen in Cinnamon doesn't mean it isn't a driver bug; the drivers interact with software in different ways. For example, Plasma is hardware-accelerated while I believe Cinnamon is CPU-rendered, so it bypasses the GPU entirely.
Comment 13 Nick Stefanov 2021-08-09 07:58:23 UTC
I don't have problems with the same NVIDIA driver version but with different Plasma versions. What says this to you?
Comment 14 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 09:58:00 UTC
Now I tried with very old NVIDIA drivers which I don't have any problems with in the past:
450.119.03
455.45.01
460.91.03
465.31
470.74

And the newer beta driver version:
470.62.05

The problem is there with all these driver versions. For example I didn't get any problems in this regrd with 460.xx driver but now this problem is here. This problem appears with Plasma 5.21 no matter the driver version.
Comment 15 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 09:58:25 UTC
Plasma 5.21*
Comment 16 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 09:59:59 UTC
The problem appeared with Plasma 5.22, sorry.

And again - everyday, 10 times at minimum:

Comment 18 Nate Graham 2021-10-11 17:37:59 UTC
Have you reported this to NVIDIA yet?
Comment 19 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 18:24:08 UTC
This is not a NVIDA problem and I really don't know why to report a Plasma issue to them. If I use whatever NVIDIA driver version with Plasma 5.21 or lower, there's no problem. For example, if I use NVIDIA 460.x with Plasma 5.20, the aforementioned problem is not present. If I use Plasma 5.22 with the same driver version, the problem appears and it's present. Then I can use whatever driver version and the problem is always here. Please tell me - how come there's no problem with NVIDIA 460 on all previous Plasma versions but there is with Plasma 5.22? Why the problem occurs even with the oldest available driver versions which are worked great with all previos Plasma versions? Is it really a driver version? Not at all.
Comment 20 Nate Graham 2021-10-11 19:16:11 UTC
The missing piece you aren't considering is that it's quite possible that we fixed a bug in Plasma 5.22 which exposed a pre-existing bug in the NVIDIA driver. This kind of thing happens all the time: we fix something that was broken and caused other bugs, and it turns out the GPU driver was in fact relying on the previous brokenness, and breaks without it. It's not appropriate to keep something in our code knowingly broken because broken code in the GPU driver requires it. In such a case, the driver needs to be fixed, which means the driver developers need to know about it.

To report this issue to the NVIDIA folks, you can either send an email to linux-bugs@nvidia.com or make a post at https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/c/gpu-unix-graphics/linux/

It would be helpful to the NVIDIA developers if you could run nvidia-bug-report.sh and attach the resulting file in your report. Thanks!
Comment 21 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 19:20:47 UTC
It's often useless to file bugs to NVIDIA. They rarely look at them. It seems I'll have to use to this bug...
Comment 22 Nate Graham 2021-10-11 19:50:23 UTC
That's factually untrue. We know for a fact that they do look at bug reports because one of their engineers corresponds with us and occasionally fixes issues like this.

Don't give up hope and become bitter. There is always hope as long as we try! Trying doesn't guarantee success, but *not* trying guarantees failure. And the sweetness of occasional success has to outweigh all the pain of previous failure.
Comment 23 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 20:36:19 UTC
I have reported 3 issues in the past and they even didn't make the simple effort to respond. It's a waste of time.
Comment 24 Nate Graham 2021-10-11 20:40:19 UTC
If you aren't willing to have a positive attitude and behave in a productive manner, then please just stop posting comments and wasting everyone's time.
Comment 25 Nick Stefanov 2021-10-11 21:22:09 UTC
Positive once, positive twice, positive trice, on the fourth attempt it's idiotic to be positive. When you post three issues and they didn't even respond to you, I'll want you to be positive.
Comment 26 Nick Stefanov 2021-11-23 11:49:30 UTC
Plasma 5.23.3 - The problem is still here and it's VERY annoyng.

It literally can happen hundreds of times a day.
Comment 28 Nick Stefanov 2022-01-18 11:59:43 UTC
This bug is now fixed somehow. It's obvious it's not NVIDIA's fault for the driver version is just the same. The new KDE Frameworks version (5.90) fixed this I think.
