SUMMARY

VAAPI is broken on KDE Plasma Wayland Session

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a terminal
2. Type in vainfo


OBSERVED RESULT

Error Message:
heiko@Tuxedobook:~$ vainfo
wl_drm@6: error 0: authenticate failed
VA error: wayland: Wayland roundtrip error: Protocol error (errno 71)
libva info: VA-API version 1.10.0
libva error: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with invalid VADisplay, driver_name = (null)
vaInitialize failed with error code 3 (invalid VADisplay),exit



EXPECTED RESULT
Should show VAAPI information without errors like on X11 session

wl_drm is very low in the stack, can you confirm this works correctly in weston.

I have tried the same on Kubuntu 21.04 (Plasma 5.22.0) today with an AMD GPU. MESA-VA Drivers are installed. vainfo works on X11. On Wayland i get the same result as on my Notebook with an Intel iGPU. Typing in vainfo into a terminal results in the following:

It might also be important that KODI Mediacenter is not starting on Plasma Wayland because of this VAAPI problem. Starting KODI from the terminal results in the same error.

I installed Weston and got the same error. So the problem seems not to be related to plasma-wayland. VAAPI seems actually broken on Wayland in general at least on Ubuntu.

No signs currently point to kwin.
