SUMMARY
What is the source for emoji names? Is it possible to have synonyms for them? The issue with unexpected emoji names appears in other applications, and is non-trivial - https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/issues/13857.

As an example, STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Ctrl+F for "explo"

OBSERVED RESULT
The "explosion"-looking emoji found is one of a small animal with its head exploding (called "astonished" in other emoji pickers)

EXPECTED RESULT
The emoji that appears when typing "boom".

(Side issue: when typing "boom", the emoji selected by default is one with a missing character, even though I do have the Noto Color Emoji font installed)

The source is: ibus/dicts/emoji-en.dict
(with relevant localisation)

Emojis can have multiple annotations and we search all annotations when filtering.

I don't think there's anything missing our side. Please reopen if there is.

Thanks. As an end user, can I file an issue somewhere upstream? My goal is to be able to find emojis when searching by synonyms. For example, right now "explosion" doesn't find the 💥 emoji.

I can't possibly find the trashcan emoji. I've searched for "rubbish" and "garbage" and "refuse" and "delete" - nothing.

FWIW it's called "wastebasket."

I do agree that a lot of these names are a bit odd. Not sure where exactly they come from though. But yeah, following up there to request more synonyms would be good.

I could follow up... where do the names come from?

Perhaps this is relevant?
