For user support, it's better to go to the user's forum, krita-artists.org. This is a place to report bugs in Krita, and this doesn't sound like a bug, but some misunderstanding of the application. Unfortunately, your description of the problem is not very clear, and it's not possible to guess what might be up. A screenshot of the full krita window including statusbar might help. If it's a problem with the version of Krita as packaged with Ubuntu Mint, you might want to try the appimage, too. In any case, we need more information before we can help you.
