The apps you already have installed display "remove" buttons so you can easily remove them. I think it would be weirder if the features app list changes itself depending on what you have installed. What I find confusing about it is why is Discover recommending that I install program X? After all I already have it installed. The remove button doesn't help, I don't want to remove it either. Already-installed software should just never appear in the recommended list at all. It can indeed be a bit weird to see those, but IMO we should still show them, since other options would lead to weirder results (for example not showing any recommendations at all when they are all already installed) - What we should improve is the presentation and selection of the recommendations instead of just having this stale list. IMO that would also result in already installed apps looking less weird in the list I agree that it can be off-putting a bit to show apps already installed as a suggestion but a Featured section isn't really a recommendation setup. I think Discover should introduce a recommendation option based on what people have installed but a Featured section that is meant for everyone is a good thing to have as well. I think the problem is that Discover is designed in a way that multiple sections are not accessible at the same time like other app stores are built. I think the best tactic here would be to redesign the landing page of Discover so that more sections can be included such as a Featured, Recommended, Top Rated, etc. All right, fair enough! I think we can all agree that the current static featured page is sub-optimal. Personally I'd like to at least periodically rotate the recommendations. Making the recommendations dynamic is a nice idea too. Personally I'd like to at least periodically rotate the > recommendations. Making the recommendations dynamic is a nice idea too. It is inevitable to use mobile app stores as a comparison and they all seem to at least rotate their recommendations, when they're not directly tailored to the user. The latter would probably be a bit difficult to implement, though I'm not a developer so I might be wrong. One idea that pops into my mind is that Discover could rotate between lists at each launch; it would be great if lists could be published periodically and updated from repos to add to previously published ones. The possibility of adding new lists would also mean that distributions could publish their own custom lists. This is a very rough idea, of course, but it would allow some flexibility. I agree with Michael in saying that having more sections would be beneficial and help the discovery of new applications. I've split out that part of the discussion into Bug 431316. Maybe the issue is just with the German translation, which translates "Featured" as "Empfohlen" ("Recommended"). A featured app and a recommended app are not the same thing, the translation carries the connotation that it's recommended for me specifically. You can feature something even when it's already there, while recommending it doesn't make sense. That makes a lot of sense. Consider filing a new bug report to i18n | de about that. Done, filed as bug 436564 |
