There are 151 files, 115 sub-folders, including top-level folder which I want to tar.

I tar that folder to another mount point: File -> Pack... -> To archive tar -> to another mount point.

Toast displays progress bar ongoing then suddenly gets full and shows:
Packing File(s)
Processed files: 251/121

While files are still copying.
