SUMMARY

Apparently Oxygen theme was deprecated, but that's bad for users; we're not in the monochrome monitor age, which Breeze is inspired by, but sadly is the main theme. Oxygen had colour-coded logout/reboot/shutdown/etc., coloured icons, that made things distinctive. Users sometimes talk to me saying they may want to shutdown, then what icon do they press: log out, restart or shut down? They may be looking through the system tray asking me which is the icon they are looking for. Colour helped them; Breeze doesn't as much. Even experiments with other [sign-]language-using apes, they use colour icons... maybe in an experiment if rats could use a touchscreen rather than levers, monochrome might be okay... but humans aren't rats. It takes me 10 times longer to get through a Breeze logout/reboot/shutdown option screen than ones normal in the coloured-monitor-style age.

When I had to reinstall users' spare PC, suddently most the icons were missing (/home wasn't reinstalled, of course.)

I also liked the old KDE4 Produkt panel theme: in contrast, Oxygen & Breeze Dark aren't dark enough at night--too shiny.

Since we use more widgets/system-tray things, I always finding myself copying over the old klipper icon (before it was scissors as my suggestion, as I don't keep a text-editor icon by clipboard anymore)...

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Look for more-coloured theme/icon set.
2. Can't find one.
3. Install one or miss out unless you're colour-blind.

OBSERVED RESULT

Not so great choice of themes/icons, leads to problems (finding) and much wasted time.

EXPECTED RESULT

KDE usually has more options than other desktop environments... Crystal and Oxygen were best.

Oxygen is still releases with plasma as is the oxygen plasma theme with plasma-framework. The oxygen icons are a seperate framework that is released monthly. Maybe you need to install another package depending on your distro?

You can still use Oxygen icons if you'd like. We have an extensive theming system precisely because people have differing aesthetic preferences. :)
Comment 3 David Chmelik 2020-11-18 23:15:39 UTC
On the users' operating system (OS,) KDE Neon GNU/Linux, I was able to install Oxygen packages fast, and on OSs I use, they still have it, so that's fine. Rereading, now I see various articles saying parts of Oxygen were deprecated, or that it was deprecated for some specific program like Libre Office. Maybe it's not deprecated at all then? I just thought it must be since the case was I had to manually install it...

I wouldn't exactly call Oxygen icons actively developed, but they're not formally deprecated either.

There are plenty of other colorful skeumorphic icons themes out there on store.kde.org too if you don't like flat monochromatic icons.

Use plasma theme icons in kickoff leave view

These are not applications icons where we want to avoid using the plasma theme
icon overrides. Rather they represent actions that are part of the desktop
shell and should use plasma icons instead like tab icons below.
