This is insufficient information. You should at least tell us: What version of kolourpaint, what Ubuntu Version, what desktop you are using (KDE, Gnome, etc.),
when does it crash, ...

 I am using KDE 
Version 4.14.16
Ubuntu 16.04 LTSAMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 Processor × 4 
AMD RS880 (DRM 2.43.0 / 4.4.0-198-generic, LLVM 6.0.0)
64-bit   980.4 GB It crashes during prolonged use, mostly when working with zoomed in images. Thank you.

you really have close to 1 TB memory ?

can you check if you simply run out of memory ?

PS: KDE 4 is a very old version and no longer actively maintained.

Ubuntu 16.04 ... that's 5 year old software. Please use recent versions when reporting issues.
