Uninstalling and reinstalling krita will have no effect on its behaviour. When you say "...the current file I am working on, ...", do you mean one particular .kra file that you are presently interested in and so are often working with, or do you mean any existing .kra file that you open and try to work with? Does it work ok with a newly created document? If you do Select -> Deselect (or Ctrl + Shift + A) does that fix things?
