I should be able to pull them from the micorSD. I can also corroborate this using the Pi4 8GB and a blue yeti and AIY voice kit HAT and a generic USB 2.0 keyboard connected before boot alternating between the Pi 2 & 3 ports for each- using a fresh reimage for each.
